Freaky Friday
More then often i walk around with ideas what to make or built in 3d. While i’m mainly work on architectural impressions, it’s fun to explore other interests like design, art, ambiance & light. I introduced Freakyfriday to myself to work some of those ideas out whenever i got time on friday.

Yayoi Kusama
I start off with an artist i much admire; Yayoi Kusama. Last year i visited an exhibition in Centre de Pompidou and i was stunned by the way she transformed normal things and environments into an abnormal almost hallucinating scene. Inspired by this great artist i made a beginning with a 3d creation of some of her art pieces. The first impressions: (Those are not replicas of the original)

After some progress:

Yayoi Kusama, Infinity Mirrored Room
This room was absolutly amazing to experience “in reallife” at the Centre de Pompidou last year. For a long time i wanted to recreate this in 3d and make a 360 panorama of it. Today on freaky friday i finally got some time. The room is 4 x 4m and has a grid of 256 small lamps. The walls are covered with mirrors, the floor and ceiling are a bit less shiny, which gives this endless sort of galaxy look.

click on the picture to see the Blue 360° panorama

click on the picture to see the Green yellow 360° panorama

First an impression of what happens if we open the whole building. I made a short (15s) animation seeing the window / facade disappearing in the ground. If you look better you’ll see the doors and the roofs disappear in the concrete. (a bit of flickering because i changed the campath after calculating the Irrmap.

I did some simple unwrapping and painted some dirt in photoshop. I never got into unwrapping before so it was a bit of a pity to get the first one working. But actually its quite easy. Later on I’ll do some test for painting on the concrete. I have some nice ideas to make it more interesting.

While rendering the animation, i tested a first set-up for my lighting based on true ligt distribution (ies). The four concrete blocks, i call them the seasons, have there own lightsetup so i can change the color & intensity separately. This could be very nice in a later stadium..

Next Part is to make this project alive!
- add furniture, lamps,
- designing the bar
- add surroundings
- texturing
- Different light setups

Part IV i will test different concrete paintings and concretematerials i’ve seen at Materia Experience this year.

After this its time for rendering and work out the 4 – seasons, beginning with the winter.

4 Season Pavilion is an old study project. Actually, this is the project I (Jeroen Prins) Eric de Lange and Lotte Wilbrink graduate with on our bachelor of Architecture in 2007. It was a fictive project to make a 4 season terrace in the centre of Hoogenveen, in the north of the Netherlands.

About the design
The goal was to achieve a terrace / pavilion where people could drink, eat, rest and lounge through whole the year, but also experience the 4 seasons. In the summer we want to sit outside and feel the fresh air, while on the warmest moment of the day we want shelter from the direct sunlight. In the winter we seek a warm and cosy environment which offers shelter from the cold breeze outside. The spring and autumn could be very variable. One moment it is rainy and the other moment it’s warm and beautiful outside.

We want a terrace that is as open as possible without taking away the shelter most people like. In order to achieve a building that can adapt to its climate we had to think about dynamic constructions. We had to make a building that offers as much shelter as open space. We came up with four concrete segments with in between glass constructions which can be opened and closed to achieve the right climate. The concrete segments are based on the viewing lines to the big tree. A lot of time was spent on research about the two big façades which disappear completely in the ground! But also the roof and the big doors weren’t quit standard.

[2005] 4 Season Pavilion Animation from 3d Studio Prins on Vimeo.

Old impressions from 2007

Why this blogpost?
This project is five years old, back then we had a really tight deadline and there wasn’t much time for presentation. I actually made the animation beneath, the day before the final presentation.. Those were also the first attempts with Vray
I still thinks this is a very nice project and ideally for learning new techniques and different presentation styles.

The goal
The goal is to make new impressions of different seasons. Rework the materials, add details, maybe rework a bit of the design, testing different light settings, and maybe an animation which shows the open and closing procedure. I will work on this project in my free time so it has no deadline. Stay tuned for part II!
